Conventional intensive animal farming without the extensive use of antibiotics is unthinkable. The effect of this is the development of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and can potentially be transmitted to humans. To deal with the problem of developing resistances the use of reserve antibiotics is not uncommon, increasing the danger of future disease outbreaks.

The existing documentation of the conditions in industrial poultry farming was therefore complemented to include an extensive sampling program documenting the presence of antibiotics and multi-resistant bacteria at the production sites.
