BRAZILIAN soy for GERMAN animal feed

The environmental organizations Deutsche Umwelthife and Mighty Earth wanted to investigate the risks of human rights violations and environmental destruction in the soy supply chain of German pig production.

The agricultural trader Bunge imports a quarter of Brazil's soy to Germany and is associated with human rights violations and environmental destruction, particularly in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Careco investigated the supply chain via feed manufacturers and fatteners to German pork producers such as Tönnies and Westfleisch.

The report shows that the companies Tönnies and Westfleisch must do more to fulfill the requirements of the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act and the new EU regulation against deforestation than to limit their due diligence obligations to relying on industry agreements such as the QS certification mark for fresh food.
