EU fisheries - subsidies not sustainable

Seas At Risk commissioned an analysis to examine whether the allocation of certain subsidies from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund can lead to the financing of harmful fishing practices and potentially increase overcapacity.

For example, data from three different databases were compared and analyzed to verify the subsidy for the temporary cessation of fishing activities.

The results showed, among other things, that subsidies to cover operating costs, such as funds for the juvenile fishing scheme (Article 31), can prove to be harmful subsidies, as the protective measures associated with them are not sufficient to prevent their harmful effects.
